Frequently Asked Questions

What tuning systems does the app support? Microtonal Lab supports all standard equal temperaments (12-EDO, 19-EDO, 24-EDO, 31-EDO, 41-EDO, 53-EDO, and more), as well as just intonation systems including Harry Partch’s 43-tone scale.

What is the Interval Explorer? A continuous slider that lets you sweep any interval from 0 to 1200 cents. It shows the nearest simple ratio, deviation from 12-EDO, and a consonance rating in real time.

What is the Harmonic Galaxy? An interactive map of harmonic intervals built from pure ratios. Tap any interval to hear it, select multiple to build a scale, and save it to your library.

How do I lock the sequencer or launchpad to a scale? Open the Scale Library (book icon) from any view, browse or select a scale, and tap “Use scale”. The sequencer, launchpad, and keyboard all constrain to that scale’s notes.

How does the Step Sequencer work? Each of the 16 steps can be toggled on or off. Tap a step to set its pitch, octave, and velocity. Randomize generates patterns that stay in the active scale. Playback modes: Forward, Reverse, Ping-pong, Random.

What is the Launchpad? A grid-based live performance pad. Each row is a scale degree; tap pads to trigger notes while the sequencer clock runs.

How does MIDI export work? The app exports standard MIDI files from the sequencer or launchpad. Because standard MIDI only has 12 semitones, microtonal pitches are encoded using per-channel pitch bend — one channel per note — so any DAW or software synth that supports pitch bend will play back the correct microtonal tuning.

Can I use the app with headphones? Yes. The app supports standard audio output including headphones, Bluetooth, and AirPlay.

Does the app work offline? Yes, completely. No internet connection is required at any time.

Which devices are supported? iPhone and iPad running iOS 17 or later.
