Konnakol

What is Konnakol? Konnakol is an iPhone/iPad app for learning and practicing konnakol (solkattu) — the rhythmic solfège system of South Indian Carnatic music, recited over a tala (rhythmic cycle) marked with claps, waves, and finger counts.

What's the difference between "nadai" and "phrase length"? Nadai is the fixed grid that drives the tala's click — how many subdivisions fit in each beat. Phrase length is how many syllables the recited pattern actually has. When they match, the phrase resets every beat (the simple case). When they differ, the phrase keeps cycling independently of the beat grid, producing a real cross-rhythm (e.g. a 3-syllable phrase over a steady 4-per-beat pulse).

What voices are available? Voice plays real recorded konnakol syllables. Tabla plays the same syllables as tabla strokes from a bundled instrument, as a stylistic alternate — note that tabla is North Indian percussion, while konnakol's actual companion instrument is the South Indian mridangam, so this pairing is for variety rather than tradition.

What is the tambura drone? An optional ambient background drone, common in Carnatic performance practice. It's independent of the Play/Stop button — turn it on or off from the Volume section, and it keeps playing until you turn it off or leave the screen.

Does the app work offline? Yes — Konnakol works entirely offline. No internet connection is required or used for anything in the app.
